Tips When Booking Your Wedding Photographer

Tips To Booking A Wedding Photographer

Once your wedding date is fixed and you’ve officially announced it to your close ones, it’s time for you to start looking for the other ‘perfect match’ for your big day. Wondering who am I talking about? It is your wedding photographer! This is the person responsible for translating your wedding vision into stunning images. And with so many photographers to choose from, selecting the one who matches the photography style you are looking for could take longer than you had thought. While one wedding photographer could be specialized in bridal portraits, the other could be a pro in black and white photography, and yet another an expert in light and airy photography. So how do you find the wedding photographer who would capture the essence of your special day just the way you want it? As a wedding photographer with 15 years of experience behind me, I share a few tips here from the knowledge I’ve gained from photographing weddings over the years that could make the process a little easier for you.

Top 5 Tips To Booking A Wedding Photographer

1. View Full Galleries

The countdown has begun, and you have hundreds of things to attend to. From finalizing the venue to last-minute trials of your wedding attire - your hands are full. While your rush is genuine, just take a moment to breathe! And think about this - you have put in so much effort to plan your dream wedding. So when it comes to capturing these moments for years to come, you deserve to have a photographer on board who understands your style and delivers accordingly. Therefore, before you finalize your photographer, I suggest you take out some time to go through the photographer’s entire galleries instead of just skimming and scanning through their photos. A portfolio of images across many weddings may not completely bring out a photographer’s true style and skill. Viewing a few weddings from start to end could help you understand how the photographer approaches each part of the day through their images and get a grasp of their photography style. That way, you would also get an idea of what to expect from your wedding gallery. So before zeroing on a photographer, be sure to compare some full galleries of weddings that are similar to your wedding photography vision.

2. How Experienced Is Your Photographer?

Your wedding celebration isn’t an everyday affair. It’s a milestone, and you’d want everything about your wedding to be just perfect! The same rule applies when you get down to choosing your wedding photographer. In fact, even when the flowers wilt, the decorations are taken down, and your guests have left, it is your wedding images that will continue to bring back the happy memories to you. Therefore, having a photographer who holds vast experience in the style you want your wedding to be photographed in is important - one who is a seasoned professional and able to anticipate moments, work around people (your family, friends, and vendors), and guide you toward having a truly memorable experience.

3. Personality Counts

You will be spending the bulk of your wedding day with your photographer. Therefore, it is only natural that you hire someone who is easy to work with - someone who feels like a friend. During the pre-booking meetings with the photographer, if you don’t feel comfortable around them, then chances are you won’t gel even on the day of your wedding. Communicate and interact with them as much as possible to understand if they are in sync with your personality and wedding photography vision. Also, if they are trying to reach out to you, hear them out. Who knows, they might have amazing creative ideas that you could incorporate in your wedding photography.

4. Take A Look At Reviews & Testimonials

Though you may have researched for photographers that match your style and vision, and also liked some portfolios, it’s always good to check out the reviews on social media platforms and forums. Even the testimonials on forums or the photographer’s own website could be helpful in finding the perfect fit for yourself. You could sometimes come across photography brands that have impressive websites, but the reviews say a different story or their previous clients could even be calling them unprofessional (think photos not delivered after the wedding is over and payments have been made).

5. Be Clear About Photo Rights

If you're paying upfront for the wedding coverage, you should have access to the photos as well, both digital and prints. We are in the age of technology, and your wedding photos should not be held hostage. Discuss this clearly with the photographer you are considering. At Robb McCormick Photography, we offer a wide selection of prints and albums, but you own your wedding images and can use them the way you want to.
