Priya's Mehndi | Indian Wedding Photography

Weddings are celebrations of love and union, and the ones dipped in culture and traditions have an unparalleled charm. Indian weddings beautifully showcase that spirited charm rooted in culture. And over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to photograph many such colorful celebrations and understand the nuances of the traditions and rituals. Most Indian weddings are spread over two-to-three days - with each day celebrating a particular custom - rather than being a single-day affair. And the tradition of applying mehndi - a temporary body art - a night or two before the wedding ceremony is one such key custom that forms a part of many Indian weddings. So when Priya chose me to photograph her Mehndi celebration, I was more than happy to document this lovely occasion.

As per Indian beliefs, Mehndi, a herbal paste also known as henna, signifies positivity and good luck. Made from a medicinal plant, the dye is said to have cooling properties. So, to wish the bride health and prosperity as she begins her new journey with her partner, the paste is applied on her hands, arms, and feet - as one of the markers of her bridal adornments. It is then left for a few hours to dry and stain the skin to create beautiful patterns.

For my bride, Priya, this was the first day of her three-day wedding celebrations. So the festivities were kicked off with the henna applications. She looked so lovely and radiant in her beautiful Indian attire, and the whole venue was decked up in florals, both indoors and outdoors. There was bright and colorful Rangoli (designs made of dry powdered colors) at the doorstep outdoors, floral arrangements on the floor indoors, and alluring glittery designs on the glass table where the deity was seated. The temple was decorated so tastefully, and I took many detail shots of all the arrangements. From flower-adorned bowls to red and crimson carpets, the venue looked just perfect for the Mehndi celebration. The corner with a beautifully adorned swing with yellow flowers looked so grand! These made for stunning images. And as Priya got those gorgeous and intricate designs made on her palms, I couldn’t stop admiring the intricacies of the patterns and the beauty in everything around.

Priya and Connor, if you are reading this, I hope both of you like these pictures as much as I loved taking them. Though Connor is not in these images, he sure was on my bride’s mind all day long. And I could see how she looked forward to a promising future with her groom with a sparkling smile and twinkling eyes.
